Step One: Find A Therapist

So you decided to take the step (brave step) and begin your journey of therapy - now what? Do your research! You have the right as a client who you choose to be your therapist. Think about it - you’re going to be potentially sharing very intimate details of your life, and you want to make sure that you feel safe in the space you reside, and trust the person sitting across from you as you share your story.

Google therapists in your preferred geographical area, and begin to think about whether the information that they present i.e. therapeutic motto, specialties, etc., is relatable to you. Will the therapist be able to address your needs, incorporate your strengths and ultimately meet your goals?

Inquire whether therapists offer initial consultations. Consultations are valuable since you get to put a name to a face, ask additional questions and most importantly decipher therapeutic fit before committing. I have had potential clients tell me at our consultation that they had numerous consultations set up with different therapists that week, and I encourage you to “shop around” too.
